Earth moving shapes the ground around a new home or addition: cutting and filling to the right grades, backfilling and compacting around foundations, and keeping soil in place.
Our team handles it as part of the construction projects we build in Richmond Hill and across York Region.
Most of the earth moving on a project is hidden once it's finished, but it decides how the house performs for years. Backfill that isn't compacted settles, and the driveways, walkways and patios on top of it crack or sink. Ground that slopes toward the house sends water against the foundation, a common cause of wet basements. We place and compact fill in layers, and shape the final grades so rain and snowmelt flow away from the building and toward the drainage the lot was designed for.
Soils across York Region range from heavy clay to the sand and gravel of the Oak Ridges Moraine, and each behaves differently wet and dry. We plan earth moving around the seasons, protect exposed soil from washing away during heavy rain and the spring thaw, and keep silt fencing and other erosion controls in place until the ground is stabilized with topsoil, sod or planting. When the soil we dig up isn't suitable as fill, we haul it away and bring in material that is.
We carry out earth moving as part of the projects we design and build: new custom homes, additions, basement walkouts, driveways, patios and outdoor living spaces. Because the same team does the site work and the construction, grades and compaction are planned around the foundation, the drainage design and the landscaping that finishes the job. You deal with one company from the first excavation to the final walkthrough.
Earth Moving
Our Process
We work from the approved grading and drainage plan, so cuts, fills and final elevations are set before any soil moves.
We move soil from high areas to low ones, reuse suitable material on site, and haul away what can't be reused.
We place backfill around foundations and trenches in layers and compact each one to limit settling later.
We keep erosion controls in place, then spread topsoil and shape final grades so water drains away from the building.

Cut and fill is the process of removing soil from areas that are too high (the cut) and placing it where the ground is too low (the fill) to reach the grades on the plan. Done well, it reuses as much of the site's own soil as possible, which means less trucking, and leaves a level, stable base for the house, the driveway and the yard.
Loose soil settles over time. If the backfill around a foundation or under a driveway, walkway or patio isn't compacted, the surface above it can sink, crack or start sloping toward the house. We place fill in layers and compact each one, so the ground stays where it was built and drains the way it was designed to.
If your project includes work around the house, such as an addition, a basement walkout, a new patio or landscaping, we can regrade the area so water flows away from the foundation. We look at downspouts, window wells and the slope of the surrounding ground, and shape the final grades to match the drainage plan for the lot.
We install silt fencing and other sediment controls before soil is disturbed, keep stockpiles away from drains and slopes, and limit how much ground is left bare at one time. Erosion controls stay in place until the soil is stabilized with topsoil, sod or planting. This keeps mud off the street and out of storm drains and neighbouring yards.
